How to Add a New Category in WordPress

WordPress categories are used to organize your blog posts. Different posts related to the same topic can be placed in one category. When a visitor opens a category, they can find all relevant posts on a single page, which increases the chances of them opening multiple posts.

Let’s see how we can create categories and subcategories in WordPress.

First, log in to your WordPress admin dashboard. On the left sidebar, you will see a menu with different options. Hover your cursor over the Posts option, and more options will appear. Click on Categories.

Now, give your category a name. This name will be visible to website visitors, so it should be relevant to the group of posts included in the new category.

Next is the Slug. Just below the name field, the slug is the user-friendly part of your permalink. It appears at the end of your page URL. In this example, “PC” means personal computer, which is the name of our new category.

After that, there is a drop-down menu where you can select the Parent Category. You can set the category as a parent category or a child category. This helps keep your content organized. For example, you could have “Computer” as a parent category and “Personal Computer” as a child category.

If you haven’t decided on the structure and hierarchy of your categories yet, you can leave this set to None and change it later.

The next field is the Description, which is not very important, so you can leave it blank.

Now, scroll down and click the Add New Category button.

Notice on the right side that once you click the button, a new category called “Personal Computer” is added to the category list, and the slug is set to “PC.”

I hope this is clear to you. Thank you for watching.

Conclusion

You now know how to add a new category in WordPress.
