What are DMARC Records?

DMARC stands for Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance, and is an email authentication, policy, and reporting protocol.

DMARC extends the widely-used SPF (Sender-Policy-Framework) and DKIM protocols, adding linkage to the author (“From:”) domain name, published policies for recipient handling of authentication failures, and reporting from receivers to senders, to improve and monitor protection of the domain from fraudulent email.

Requirements

In order to use the DMARC policy extensions, the following prerequisites are required:

  • Configured SPF records
  • Configured DKIM keys

How it works

Based upon the result of SPF and DKIM protocals, the DMARC protocol applies additional steps for verification and mail-handling processes.
